Description:
I look at the land use change in James Bay, northern Quebec due to logging. This is the homeland of the James Bay Cree. The non-Cree logging that has spread rapidly since the 1970s greatly effects their land and way of life. I look at the spatial distribution of logging, the succession of logged patches over time, and the effects of forestry regulations on logging distribution and impact. I layer Cree perspectives and land use practices with spatial data in order to understand how logging and forestry regulations play into a larger story of Cree self-determination and autonomy.
