Description:

As part of the Berkley program this semester we are working in the area of broadening the base of conservation to under-represented groups.  This project has several components, one of which is a GIS mapping exercise to examine the connection between diversity (income, race, age, health) and land conservation.  We hope to explore the connections between diversity and currently conserved land as well as diversity and areas of high conservation potential.  Many different indices for high conservation potential have been developed, but given that our study will be focusing on states in New England (CT, NY, ME) we would like to use forests and wetlands that are currently not conserved.  From our research it appears that LandSat images may be our best source of this type of data.
