Description:

This research will test the hypothesis that upper-Housatonic, early-republic entrepreneurs’ preference for use of indigenous natural resources over those available with improved transportation systems affected their production decisions. Digital orthophoto quads will enable significant archaeological sites to be located, mapped and surveyed quickly and inexpensively. Locating sites on these images will assist in gaining in-depth understanding of the context in which entrepreneurs in the upper Housatonic River basin reached decisions. The social and environmental consequences of these decisions may then be examined and compared with those of decisions made by entrepreneurs elsewhere who followed distinctly different courses.
