GOES-S at Checkout Location 89.5 degrees west
March 30, 2018

In November of 2016 NASA and NOAA launched its latest generation of Geostationary Operational Satellites, the GOES-R series.  Once this reached a stable orbit and began the checkout phase it was renamed GOES-16 and positioned at 75.2° west.  This is commonly referred to as GOES-East and covers the eastern side of the US, the Caribbean region and the western Atlantic Ocean.  The higher resolution  and frequency of imagery was extremely helpful during the 2017 hurricane season.  You can learn much more about this amazing new sensor family at:  https://www.goes-r.gov/

On 1 March 2018 NASA and NOAA launched GOES-S, the latest satellite in the series.  This has now reached a stable orbit at 89.5° west and has been officially renamed GOES-17.  It is undergoing on-orbit checkout and late this year will be moved into its final orbiting location at 137° west.  Then it will be referred to as GOES-West.  This will complete the coverage of the US and eastern Pacific Ocean.
