PE&RS August issue focusing on hyperspectral RS and agriculture

August 4, 2014

This month, August 2014, the remote sensing journal PE&RS has a special issue on hyperspectral sensors, images, and processing.  The featured article “Biomass Modeling of Four Leading World Crops Using Hyperspectral Narrowbands in Support of HyspIRI Mission” is co-authored by Prasad Thenkabail of the USGS.  Some of you may remember that Prasad spent several years working as a research scientist at the YCEO.

The authors use ground-based sensors to evaluate several modeling techniques.  They focus on four water intensive crops in the Central Valley of California; alfafa, maize, rice and cotton.  They conclude that these techniques, applied to satellite sensors, can help conserve water and improve crops at broad scales.
