Quantifying Urban Heat Island causes

F&ES doctoral student Lei Zhao and Yale professor Xuhui Lee recently published a paper in the journal Nature quantifying, for the first time, the primary causes of the Urban Heat Island effect.   This comprehensive study used 10 years of MODIS Land Surface Temperature data to examine 65 cities in North America, and climate modeling from the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
