Description:
Ross Donihue and I are reproducing the methodology used in a Frolkling 2013 paper to examine the vertical vs. horizontal expansion of global urban areas, targeting all cities above 1 million people (504). Using Global Human Settlements data, Global Radiance Calibrated Nighttime Lights data, and SeaWinds data from 2000-2010, we’re reprocessing each set to a common resolution, calculating a regression for the changes over time, and analyzing horizontal versus vertical growth for each urban area.
